COMMENTARY

Columnist Jim Elliott writes that life seems to happen in a blink of an eye, as he reflects over the words he read as a young man, now contemplating them as an older man.

THE DR. HOOK

In the late 1960s and early 1970s there were so many crossover groups that seemed to be as much country as rock, or as much rock as country. From The Byrds to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to Dr. Hook to the Bellamy Brothers — all had a sound that crossed over the genres.

There were few voices as smooth as Dennis Locorriere, of Dr. Hook. The band will always be known for helping to immortalize itself and the rock-and-roll magazine, Rolling Stone with the song, “Cover of the Rolling Stone” — a humorous look at trying to make it famous and the things that bands and artists have to do to get on the cover of the venerable journal of who’s-who in rock music.

Locorriere died this past weekend, and he was known for his voice and lead vocals on “Slyvia’s Mother” and today’s feature, “When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman.” That kind of bourbon-smooth voice gave the band part of its wide crossover appeal which allowed the band to sell plenty of records and concerts.

And, it’s probably only fitting that Rolling Stone featured his obituary here.
