“In my region, a lot of people are remote and rural. People don't have computers, they don't have cell phones, they don't do that sort of stuff. You actually go in and buy stuff and pay money for it. And I always thought that this online licensing thing kind of discriminates against a lot of people that just don't have that kind of lifestyle.” — Rep. Paul Fielder, R-Thompson Falls, about an unpopular Fish, Wildlife and Parks licensing system that largely doesn’t accept cash.

Under pressure, Helena City Commission votes to rescind immigration resolution
by Jordan Hansen
On the advice of legal counsel and possibly in the face of steep financial losses, the Helena City Commission rescinded an immigration resolution on Thursday night in a special meeting at the city’s Civic Center. The resolution reiterated the city’s support for immigrant communities and was essentially a public reminder of its policy and procedures […]

ICYMI: COMMERCE ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR TRIBAL TOURISM
The Montana Department of Commerce announced that two Montana tribal governments, the Blackfeet Nation and Fort Belknap Indian Community, will share $100,000 of grant funding to develop, expand and strengthen local tribal tourism assets and economies.
COMMENTARY
Montana’s rivers are in trouble, but legislators and advocates aren’t using the tools or funding at their disposal to help, argues George Ochenski. Montana has given away more rights and permits than it has water, and the problem, he says, is getting worse.
FROM OUR D.C. BUREAU
A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators from the Midwest on Thursday asked the Commerce Department to investigate major agricultural machinery manufacturers, saying they paid shareholders handsomely while offshoring jobs.
President Donald Trump, who wants to ban mail-in voting, said he had the right to vote by mail-in ballot in Florida’s special election “because I’m president of the United States.”
The college sports landscape continues to grapple with gender inequity in Name/Image/Likeness, or NIL. Thursday, a U.S. Senate panel heard testimony on reshaping college athletics and an argument “the NCAA has failed and continues to fail to protect and respect college athletes.”
President Trump announced that he will sign an order allowing the Department of Homeland Security to pay airport security workers who have gone without a full paycheck since the shutdown began in mid-February.
Senate Democratic leaders on Thursday were reading through a new Republican offer to fund the Department of Homeland Security that could end the shutdown that began nearly six weeks ago, with a congressional recess set to begin.
The U.S. Senate was unable to agree whether to require photo identification to vote in federal elections, as the chamber debated a larger bill that would make several changes to how Americans register and cast ballots.
MONTANA ROCKS (Montana is spicy, at any rate)
My colleague Jordan Hansen sent me this screenshot from a Reddit post. The Montana Public Service Commission recently took action to protect the state as a 406-area-code-only place. It’s also taken votes that increase people’s power bills.

THE HOOK
Here’s a recommendation from SO, a return to roots by Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Michael Peter Balzary, with the album “Honora.”
He told the LA Times he always loved the trumpet, and unlike the bass, it makes huge demands on a musician.
Flea also talked about his commitment to his craft, a promise to practice every day for two years at the age of nearly 60, to master the trumpet.
Today’s Hook is “A Plea,” with these instructions:
“Build a bridge, shine a light.”
Good advice for your Friday, or any day.
