"I talk to people on the daily who say, ‘I’m worried about the price of groceries, I’m worried about the price of gas, I feel like everything except for my wage is going up.’” Megan Hamann, of Nebraska Appleseed, an advocacy nonprofit that works against poverty and discrimination.

‘That’s absolutely crazy,’ says Gianforte about Oregon’s proposed hunting ban

by Daily Montanan Staff

Gov. Greg Gianforte lambasted an Oregon ballot initiative gaining traction in the state that would criminalize licensed hunting and fishing. “Did you hear what they are trying to do in Oregon? They are literally trying to outlaw hunting and fishing – that’s absolutely crazy,” Gianforte said in a video released Wednesday. “Here in Montana, hunting […]

Battle of Little Bighorn, of Greasy Grass to be commemorated

Trina Lone Hill is not excited about the July 3 fireworks display at Mount Rushmore to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday.

“I actually find it offensive,” said Lone Hill, an Oglala Sioux Tribal Council member and former tribal historic preservation officer from Batesland, on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

State and federal officials “don’t care if we’re resisting, they don’t care if we have opinions,” she said. The Black Hills, where Mount Rushmore is located, is “our sacred place,” she added.

Instead of observing the nation’s birthday during the Fourth of July weekend, Lone Hill’s focus is on an event this week: the 150th commemoration of the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

FROM OUR D.C. BUREAU

A federal poverty-fighting program focused on reducing unintended pregnancies is about to undergo a major overhaul.

U.S. Senate Republicans walked into a lunch with President Donald Trump looking for ways to unify, but they left as fractured as ever. Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy said he appreciated the president’s “candor” during the meeting before saying Trump was “mad as a murder hornet about the war powers vote.”

Trump derailed a housing overhaul that he was set to sign into law Wednesday, canceling a signing ceremony for the broadly popular bipartisan bill until Congress passes an election security measure.

The U.S. Postal Service won’t deliver mail ballots in states that refuse to turn over lists of voters under a proposed rule, the agency’s chief executive said, angering Democrats who warn the decision will disenfranchise voters.

A federal appeals court ruled the Department of Justice isn’t entitled to access the sensitive personal data of Michigan voters, a setback in Trump’s push to assert power over state-run elections. The decision moves the country closer to a potential fight at the U.S. Supreme Court over state voter rolls ahead of the November midterm elections, with Michigan at the center.

Families, lawmakers and advocates paid tribute to victims of social media harms at Social Media Victims Remembrance Day, founded in 2023 by two mothers whose sons died the same morning.
