IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

After Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh was confirmed and sworn in by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, President Donald Trump said that he doesn’t expect the new chairman to do anything but a good job and that he will be totally independent, a claim that was questioned because of the way the President has treated former Fed Chief Jerome Powell.

After the United States House of Representatives passes a law that would approve a year-round blend of ethanol into gas, the measure faces an uncertain future in the United States Senate.

Most of the time, the interactions and the relationships of the United States Supreme Court are opaque and speculative. In other words: With the exception of the rulings themselves, what happens in the court often stays in the court. But in a series of public comments given by the justices recently, The New York Times shows a fractured and sometimes divided court.

THE HOOK

Just as there was a “golden age” of rock-and-roll, there was a golden age of “country.” Maybe one of the most fascinating aspects is that they largely overlapped, thanks to the development of technology, which increased the reach of popular music in general.

One of the big stars of country, Stonewall Jackson, is somewhat overlooked today. But from 1957 through the 1970s, there weren’t many larger stars. He was so unique that he was signed to a contract on the Grand Ole Opry before he had a professional recording contract in hand.

Though he shares the same name as a famous Confederate Civil War general, and though his father claimed that he was a direct descendant, that claim — exploited for its popularity in the South — was never proven. Looking back at his amazing career, it’s also evident that he didn’t need to ride the coattails of a long-dead confederate.

Just as there is a canon of rock-and-roll music, so too is there a collection of popular country hits. What’s true about both of them is that there are a many songs that achieved quite a measure of popularity in both genres that are now overlooked. One of those songs that doesn’t get much airplay or attention was Jackson’s 1964 “A Wound That Time Can’t Erase.”
