Wanted: Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen at the Legislature
by Keila Szpaller
Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle still have questions for Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen. Jacobsen, however, has not been present for at least a couple of recent meetings of legislative committees charged with oversight of the Secretary of State’s Office and audit responsibilities. As a result, some legislators are considering their subpoena […]

Education Department to transfer management of defaulted student loans to Treasury
by Shauneen Miranda
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Treasury Department will take over the Department of Education’s responsibility for collecting on defaulted federal student loan debt, President Donald Trump’s administration announced Thursday. It’s the first step in a multi-phase process that will end with Treasury taking on the entire federal student loan portfolio. It’s also the latest interagency agreement announced […]

Downing toes Republican talking points during talk of Iran, SAVE America Act and ICE protests
by Darrell Ehrlick
A lot has happened since Montana Congressman Troy Downing held his last telephone town hall. Half of the state’s all-Republican delegation announced it would not seek re-election, leaving Downing as the only incumbent standing for possible re-election in November. And while the landscape across Montana and the country has changed — the U.S has initiated […]
COMMENTARY
Columnist George Ochenski says you don’t have to be that old to remember the last time we went marching off to war. And Ochenski himself is old enough to remember protesting against the Vietnam War. No matter how far back your memory stretches, he asks the question: Do we really need to start another war, and will this one be as long and uncertain as the others?
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
While America’s debt hit $39 trillion, President Donald Trump said he will likely ask Congress for another $200 billion to fund the war efforts in Iran, even though some members of Congress question the efforts.
Speaking of war efforts in Iran, the United States Senate voted again on Thursday to potentially limit the power that President Donald Trump has, exercising its War Powers Act, but like previous attempts, the measure fell short of the threshold needed to corral the president.
On a very narrow vote, the United States Senate voted to forward former U.S. Sen. Markwayne Mullin’s nomination to become the Secretary of Homeland Defense to the full Senate floor, with one Democrat, John Fetterman and one Republican, Rand Paul, flipping votes.
As Congress considers trying to eliminate the Department of Education, the Trump administration announces that it will be transferring student loans and debt servicing to the the U.S. Treasury Department.
THE HOOK
To close out another busy week in the ol’ news department, we are going to turn “The Hook” over to a friend and eDJ Gary Adams. He writes:
Not many of us listened to Hoyt Axton back in the day, but he also had a mild way of protesting some things. His song “Boney Fingers” is appropriate in this day and age with the increasing chasm between haves and have-nots. It also says a lot about maintaining hope that times will change.
“Boney Fingers”
by Hoyt Axton
See the rain comin' down and the roof won't hold her
Lost my job and I feel a little older
Car won't run and our love's grown colder
But maybe things'll get a little better in the mornin'
Maybe things'll get a little better
Oh, the clothes need washin' and the fire won't start
Kids all cryin' and you're breakin' my heart
Whole darn place is fallin' apart
Maybe things'll get a little better in the mornin'
Maybe things'll get a little better
Work your fingers to the bone
Whadda ya get? (Whoo-hoo)
Boney fingers
Boney fingers
Yeah, I've been broke as long as I remember
Get a little money and I gotta run and spend it
When I try to save it, pretty woman come and take it
Sayin' maybe things'll get a little better in the mornin'
Maybe things'll get a little better
Work your fingers to the bone
Whadda ya get? (Whoo-hoo)
Boney fingers
Boney fingers, alright
Yeah, the grass won't grow and the sun's too hot
The whole darn world is goin' to pot
Might as well like it 'cause you're all that I've got
But, maybe things'll get a little better in the mornin'
Maybe things'll get a little better
Work your fingers to the bone
Whadda ya get? (Woo-hoo)
Boney fingers
Boney fingers
One more time
Work your fingers to the bone
Whadda ya get? (Whoo-hoo)
Boney fingers
Boney fingers
