COMMENTARY

Historian and author Marc C. Johnson writes how the United States Supreme Court has single-handedly torched the legacy that former U.S. Sen. Mike Mansfield was most proud of — his work on the Voting Rights Act.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Even as President Donald Trump declares that the U.S. military will aid in escorting ships through the Gulf of Hormuz, that has done little to soften the price of gas, which continues to creep higher. Even as that happens, polls show the number of people approving of Trump’s job declining.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to spend more than $600 million earmarked for vaccines. That money goes to purchasing vaccines to help keep the world healthy, but the State Department has not spent it yet.

After the landmark case about voting rights and gerrymandering, states across the nation have begun the process of redrawing legislative districts. This has spurred anger from liberal lawmakers as Democrats have called for a reform of the United States Supreme Court.

Even though President Donald Trump has issued executive orders regarding mail-in balloting, the U.S. Department of Justice and the United States Postal Service have both said that no concrete plans have been formulated to carry out those orders.

Since President Donald Trump retook the White House, his administration is changing the way it approaches protections for transgender individuals who apply for housing assistance.

Our colleagues in Idaho report that the Trump administration has restored the largest ever federal grant made to a university in the Gem State. The $59 million grant would help farmers and ranchers develop sustainable practices in the face of climate change.

The New York Times reports that even though vaccines continue to demonstrate through scientific research that they’re safe and reliable, that’s not something the Trump administration wants to hear. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pulled a study that showed how COVID-19 vaccines were effective, often saving patients from hospitalization.

THE HOOK

One of the things that I often hear from some people is that they don’t listen to “modern music” because nothing sounds like rock-and-roll anymore. And to that, I often reply that they may not be digging hard enough.

One of our Hooksters sent along this suggestion. There was not much more to it than: This is a good song. You should turn it up.

The Felice Brothers have been making good music for a long time. Sometimes, they’ve fallen through the cracks somewhere between radio airplay and just solid rock music. The band’s roots stretch back nearly 20 years ago to New York and the Catskill Mountains.

But it’s Tuesday and I thought we may need a good old fashion song you can sing along to, and it seems perfect that the song that was suggested for today’s “The Hook” is “Radio Song.”
